Most people think of osteopaths as ‘back specialists’ and although I treat a lot of patients with back pain, osteopathy is more versatile than that. I treat all kinds of muscle pain such as neck pain and joint pain such as arthritis pain.
Osteopathy does not target symptoms but treats the parts of the body that have caused the symptoms. It’s a holistic approach because your whole body will work well if it’s in good structural balance.
Essex Osteopathy uses touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of the joints, relieve muscle tension, enhance the blood and nerve supply to the tissues and help the body’s own healing mechanism.
A gentle pain-free treatment with a broad approach, osteopathy focuses on each patient’s precise needs and is appropriate for all: from the elderly to the newborn, from pregnant women to sports people. I also offer the most gentle treatments of cranial osteopathy and craniosacral therapy.
Restriction of movement in one part of the body can lead other parts of the body to compensate and so become stiff and sore. I may work on parts of the body that don’t hurt in order to improve the mechanics of the whole body. I may suggest exercises to do at home or give advice on posture. Your treatment may also include a gait analysis to determine if your way of moving is causing the strain. I may even advise changes in lifestyle to prevent further injury such as manual handling, exercise and diet.
